When is it time to consider a Parkinson’s care home?

In its advanced stages, Parkinson’s can make it difficult to carry out even the most simple of daily tasks. This is due to its symptoms such as tremors, muscle stiffness, and slowed motion. For many, although it can be difficult to come to terms with, it then becomes necessary to seek out additional support.

This is where nursing care for Parkinson’s patients comes in. At Country Lodge, we offer 24/7 residential care that is provided by our team of friendly, fully qualified nurses and carers who have vast experience in caring for the unique needs of Parkinson’s patients. We pride ourselves in having built a truly supportive environment that makes all of our residents feel at home. Learn more about our accommodation.

Many Parkinson’s sufferers may find it difficult to accept their reduced independence, but we find that the flexibility of our care home environment, and our unique philosophy of care allows them to remain as independent as possible, whilst ensuring all of their needs are safely met.

How can Country Lodge help with nursing care for Parkinson’s patients?

As mentioned above, our team is made up of several fully qualified, experienced, caring nurses. They’re on-hand day and night to help you or your loved one with as many or as few of the activities that Parkinson’s can make difficult. These may include, but are not limited to:
  1. Physiotherapy – We have specialist physiotherapists visit our care home regularly, and have found that these sessions are particularly beneficial for those suffering from the muscle stiffness that Parkinson’s Disease brings.
  2. Personal Care – Our kind, discreet carers are able to support your loved one to achieve as much independence in daily activities as possible, but where necessary are able to assist with any tasks that become difficult, including personal care such as bathing
  3. Exercise – As balance (and with it, confidence) deteriorates, getting regular exercise can become less and less of a priority for someone with Parkinson’s. We’re here to help all of our residents keep as active as possible. Whether that’s by accompanying them on a daily stroll around our beautiful grounds, or where possible, helping them participate in other physical activities that they used to enjoy.
  4. Help with eating – In the later stages of Parkinson’s, eating is more challenging due to the tremors. Our nurses are specially trained to be able to assist each of the residents to feed themselves or if required, the patient can be fed. Our flexible approach allows us to take whatever steps are required on a day by day basis to ensure each resident receives a balanced diet and is able to fully enjoy the home-cooked meals that are prepared daily by our team of talented chefs.

Psychological care and activities

It’s not just about physical support… As a nursing home specialising in long-term Parkinson’s care, it’s also just as important to us that our residents are supported emotionally and psychologically. The loss of independence that can come with any life-changing diagnosis such as Parkinson’s can have huge effects on a person’s mental wellbeing. We take great care to ensure that adjusting to life in a residential nursing home goes as smoothly as possible.

We offer a full and varied programme of activities designed to be engaging, encourage mental stimulation and promote social interaction between residents. Read more about the Country Lodge activity programme. We also encourage family and friends to visit as often as possible, no appointments necessary! Keeping in touch with loved ones can reduce feelings of loneliness and help with the transition to full-time care.
