History of Country Lodge

History of Country Lodge Nursing Home in Worthing

Country Lodge Nursing Home in Worthing started life as a small farm nestled in the South Downs with a large flint barn position in the middle of the site. It was purchased by a lady visionary who turned her hand to having it converted into a private home for her family. It took two years to build, but resulted in the sympathetic conversion of the main body of the building we still have today – our lounge and dining room in the old barn.

From family home to equestrian school

It was later converted into an elite equestrian school for a small select group of girls to attend with their horses and a beautiful row of stables were built across the parking area at the front of the property along Cote Street. Access to the South Downs made it an absolutely ideal place to do this.

Becoming a nursing home in West Sussex

The eventual sale by the owner was to a gentleman to open a Nursing Home, but the original owner remained heavily involved in setting up the first Nursing Home and welcoming all the first residents and staff.

Four owners later, Country Lodge Nursing Home is still a thriving community, providing a range of nursing care from Parkinson’s care, to MS care and Stroke care, across enduring views overlooking the South Downs. The 2022 extension was a result of clients expressing a need for larger rooms, with larger en suites and better access to the garden.

The future of our Worthing nursing home

Innovatively, to avoid months and months of noise and chaos the new wing was in fact constructed in Yorkshire inside a warehouse and then transported to High Salvington on 14 lorries, where it was craned onto the foundations over two nights – an operation which required a full set of flood lights and the closure of the A27!

The result is a modernised building for residents and staff containing 5 luxury bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, a new hair salon and a new Manager’s office. Due to be completed by the 1st July 2022 it is with much excitement that staff and residents look forward to the opening of the newly landscaped garden, extended and refurbished lounge and dining room and the hosting of the annual summer grill with live music.

We are so grateful to have had good weather on our side and the support of good neighbours and relatives and friends. We very much look forward to celebrating the modernisation and expansion of Country Lodge and all that it offers residents over the coming Summer months.
